About Toronto

Toronto CentreToronto is Canada's largest city and the capital of Ontario. Originally founded by the British in the eighteenth century under the name of York, the city received its current name in 1834.

With over two and a half million residents, Toronto is a world-class city with a rich culture and much to see and do. Perhaps the most recognized landmark in the city is the CN tower, one of the world's tallest freestanding structures, which affords a beautiful view of the city and surrounding area. Toronto also features many museums (including one dedicated solely to shoes), art galleries, and historical sites, as well as a zoo.

There are many shopping opportunities along Yonge Street (the longest main street in the world) and elsewhere. Toronto is also the home of the Hockey Hall of Fame, celebrating the history of Canada's national winter sport. Visitors should also be sure to visit Toronto's beaches along the shore of Lake Ontario, and take a trip off shore to the Toronto Islands, which offer more opportunity for sightseeing and relaxation.
